ANIMAL RESCUE GROUPS AND SHELTERS IN THE AREA

There are many groups & organizations in our area dedicated to helping a particular breed or mixed breed dog or cat or other type of critter. Many of these groups foster animals in their homes until they can find them a new home. Contact them to adopt a pet, relinquish a pet or to learn more about a particular breed or type of pet.

If you are surrendering an animal to a rescue we suggest that you offer a donation to help with room & board and medical costs.

If you have lost your pet:

  • Make flyers and post them in your area as soon as possible; offer a reward
  • Contact the lost pet services above
  • Go to all of your area shelters every day
  • Put an ad in the newspaper (St. Joseph News-Press charges 1/2 price for lost ads and found ads can be placed free)
  • Check the found pets section in the St. Joseph News-Press every day
  • Contact area veterinarians & post it on their bulletin boards
  • Tell your postman, neighbors & neighborhood kids

OBEDIENCE TRAINERS FOR DOGS

We highly recommend that you take your dog for obedience training. Classes should be reward-based and fun for you and your dog-this is an opportunity for you and your dog to bond. It is also a great way to socialize your pet with other people and dogs.

We've provided this list as a service to the community and to give you a place to start, but we cannot make endorsements. Before working with a trainer we recommend asking for qualifications and references. You can also ask the instructor if you can observe a class before signing up to make sure it is a good match for you and your dog. Ask your veterinarian or friends for their recommendations.
